Abstract Academic self-regulation is a key factor for motivation and learning achievement. Yet with the large range of individual factors, this not one-size-fits-all proposition. This study L2 Technical English students at two German universities explored learners’ expectations motivations, in particular regarding self-efficacy via individual’s time investment self-led study. In an initial survey, learners ( N =1646) reported on their skill levels anticipated habits. Complementarily, retrospective survey investigated =796) actual behavior during course, perceptions language improvement, satisfaction. The indicates clear understanding that self-regulated will lead to greater outcome confirmed survey. Additionally, who invested more coursework were satisfied achievement, although most acknowledge they should have studied more. results verify recognize nexus between yet university are capacity self-regulate strategies.
